What is your vision for this project?

What was the design inspiration for this project?
Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that developed in China during the 6th century as Chán. From China, Zen spread south to Vietnam, northeast to Korea and east to Japan. Zen emphasizes insight into Buddha-nature and the personal expression of this insight in daily life, especially for the benefit of others. In order to retain the unique ambience of Chinatown, we have used the Zen features of pagodas, lanterns, motifs, sand gardens and water bodies in the design of the project. Zen, with its Oriental design and sensitive architectural vocabulary, will be a major catalyst in unfolding the urban rejuvenation of Chinatown.

How will this project impact the iconic Chinatown neighbourhood?
Given its strategic location and the upcoming clutch of star hospitality addresses as well as commercial properties, Tangra’s Chinatown is now a coveted destination for city developers. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) recent pledge to augment civic infrastructure to Chinatown promises to facilitate real estate projects that would improve the quality of life in Tangra beyond imagination. City developers are making a beeline for Chinatown. With the KMC promising to play the role of an active facilitator to drive fresh growth in Chinatown, potential roadblocks have already been removed and the going is all good. The plethora of new real estate projects coming up in Chinatown will yield substantial revenue to the civic body and is bound to keep the momentum going. This will also be a huge bonus for the city’s ethnic Chinese community, that has shrunk from 15,000-plus around three decades back to a mere 1,500-odd now.
