Dear Friends,
I am a Corporate Communication Trainer for the 7 years and a freelance writer as well. I am deeply interested in researching and writing on the Chinese community in Calcutta.
I studied in Loreto, Bowbazar, right next to the Chinese hub, had many friends from the community and have become a life long fan of the cuisine and have a deep respect for the nature of the people.
Unfortunately all my friends are abroad now…this does not serve my purpose as I need to talk to as many people as possible, specially older people, to find out as much as possible about the early beginnings of the life of this community in Calcutta. It saddens me that the Chinese, who form such an integral part of the city’s identity is on a mass exodus out of it.
Daniel Wong, my ex-colleague directed me to your blog and you. There are many nitty-gritties that I as an outsider do not understand. For example, I need to understand the early history of the Chinese settlement/migration in Calcutta, how they arrived, why they chose the particular occupations they chose, the history of Tong Achi, what is the fine difference between Cantonese/Mandarin/Haka, was it a particular province of China that people migrated from, if not, which ones and why only those?
As you can see I am brimming with questions and not very clear answers. I need a guide to further my understanding of your community. Will you please help me?
Waiting eagerly for your answer.
Thanks & Regds,
Jayeeta Ghorai
