Hello,
I’m just finishing up my masters in economic and political anthropology from Brandeis University in Boston, MA. I grew up in Calcutta, and ever since I first came across a mention of Chinese immigration to India as early as the late 1700s in an Asiatic Society journal, I’ve been fascinated with the Indian Chinese community, their history, and their current social, political and economic position within Indian society.
I’ve also been struck by how little work has been done by mainstream Indian academia on the Chinese people and their contribution to Calcutta’s economy and especially culinary culture, and frankly embarrassed that there exists only one book about them, Prof. Ellen Oxfeld’s Blood, Sweat and Mahjong.
This lack of awareness of the Indian Chinese community is something that bothers me deeply both as an Indian and as an anthropologist, and is something I would like to remedy.
Last summer when I briefly went home I was privileged to meet Mr. Paul Chung, with whom I had a very productive interview. However, this summer, I would like to carry on my work more extensively, and eventually do an ethnography on the contemporary Indian Chinese community… as long as the community approves of my idea (and of me) and is willing to tolerate my anthropological interference in their lives
Best wishes,
Priyanka
(usually I go by my nickname, Rimi)
